Hotel COLONIAL superior
This neo-colonial establishment is well situated in the city centre, facing the excellent restaurant Argentina in the Soledad district. The 17 spacious rooms and suites are soberly decorated and pleasant. Private bathroom (shower) with hot water and toilet. TV. Some rooms with AC. Small swimming pool - breakfast service on the patio.
Our Opinion: An excellent place, run by the owners. For smaller budgets.
Price Range: 91-120 $
A central location in one of the city’s old parts (Barrio Amon) among many colonial houses. Within walking distance of museums, theatres and entertainment places for the evening. 24 rooms of 3 categories with private bathroom, TV. Calm, even somewhat "British" ambience. Bar, cafeteria, meeting room, shop, room service.
Our Opinion: A nice, well-maintained facility. Some rooms (as often in Latin America) are "blind" or overlook a patio.
Hotel FLEUR DE LYS charming
This Victorian house was built in the early 1900s. Its wooden interior, the facade and its patio are well-preserved. It lies in the heart of cultural San Jose, 50 metres from the Place de la Democracia and a few steps from the National Museum. 24 comfortable rooms (with fan) and 7 (junior and master) suites. Private bathroom, TV, telephone. A personal service is provided in an intimate ambience with bar, restaurant and conference room. Solar energy. Free and secured parking.
Our Opinion: An inexpensive hotel in central San Jose. Situated on a street with almost no traffic with a lovely bar on the patio. Some rooms (as often in Latin America) are "blind" or overlook a patio (special price). The standard rooms are small – one might prefer the suites.
GRAN HOTEL COSTA RICA superior, charming
This imposing neo-classical establishment was San José’s poshest hotel in the 60’s. Situated on the rather noisy Avenida 2, by the Plaza de la Cultura, it recently underwent renovation. The spacious rooms and the astonishing bathrooms have been kept in their original state. Restaurant, casino, conference rooms. From the top floor you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the National Theatre.
Our Opinion: A good choice for a stay in a nostalgic ambience. We like its terrace for an afternoon drink. Avoid the standard rooms (on the patio) if you want a view of the historic centre.
This simple hotel is located in quiet Otoya, 5 minutes walk from downtown. The 20 rooms have sober decoration and go with private bathroom, hair dryer, cable tv, telephone and safe. Restaurant, bar, terrace, private parking places. The hotel is managed by the owners.
Our Opinion: A good hotel in San José for tight budgets.

Whirlpool, solarium and massage on a wooden terrace. Intimate restaurant, small flowered patios, where breakfast is served.
Our Opinion: This establishment is unique in San José. It has a colonial charm and offers superb cooking.
